The Miniature Pinscher is an active, healthy breed. But like all breeds, the Miniature Pinscher can be affected by particular medical problems. For the Miniature Pinscher, these problems include:
The Miniature Pinscher's size and disposition make him more prone to accidents, and more susceptible to dangerous things larger dogs could handle. For example, Black Widow Spiders or small amounts of ingested poison can kill the little dog.
Broken legs are common. Young and reckless dogs are especially at risk. Some Miniature Pinschers get broken legs by simply falling off of stairs, chairs, or benches. Repairing the dog's tiny bones or growth plate usually requires costly surgeries.
Things that are harmful for dogs to eat
- Antifreeze (one tablespoon could poison a dog)

Allergies common to dogs
- Cow's milk (lactose)
- Products made from cow's milk (cheese, butter, ice cream, etc.)
- Bee stings
- Some pet food ingredients
Allergies often cause hives (bumps) to develop on the body. Hives are sometimes mistaken for flea or other insect bites.
Bee stings can be deadly if your dog is allergic. Antihistamine can be used to save an allergic dog suffering from a bee sting. Ask your vet before administering any non-prescribed medicine. |
Dog food
Miniature Pinschers need a good quality dog food made for small dogs. A small dog formula has a special balance of protein and fat. A good dog food will contain chicken meal (not chicken by-product) as the primary ingredient. Avoid brands made mostly of grains such as corn, and brands that use excessive amounts of chemicals or preservatives. Be careful the food does not have cow's milk (lactose), if your dog is allergic. Always check the expiration date before buying food, as old dog food can make your dog sick.
Premium dog food will save you money over cheap, low-quality food. On a good diet, your dog will be less hungry and less likely to have health problems. Cheap dog food is made primarily of grain, which does not satisfy your dog the way meat-based brands do. Grain leaves your dog hungry, so he has to eat more of it. This causes weight and health problems which will cost you in medical bills in the future. Also, since a low-quality food does not satisfy your pet, you have to buy more bags of it than you would a quality food, and end up spending more per week.

TIP: Store your dog food in an air-tight container. This keeps out animals, and makes the dog food fresh. Dogs prefer fresh food.
